I would say these are good entry-level monitoring headphones (for audio engineers, DJs, etc). I'll stop being a salesman for Sony. I had these hooked up to a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Card (a midrange sound card) and there was a huge difference from on board computer audio (heck my headphones where noticeably shaking). If you need a pair of headphones for any professional application this is clearly the best choice. I loaned mine to a nephew and never got them back (never again Nick) so I recently bought a new pair here on Amazon. What makes these the best? Before buying these, I had never heard the "digital" reproduction of the vibration of the piano strings when the keys are played hard. I had the lower model MDR-150 and they were ok. I have taken them on a few trips (DC to Salt Lake City and to Greece) where they have had to endure air travel in a laptop bag and a few trips through security. The coiled cable would serve aircraft use well. I haven't been disappointed. He wont use any other brand or model.
I have not heard them with a headphone amplifier. Must mean something when a product like this still looks the same and sells for the same price after 16 years! I was recommended these by a friend and I purchased them without wearing them. If you want bullet proof, accurate, comfortable and best bang for the buck over the ear headphones, go with these. After hours of wearing the headphones I would highly recommend them to anyone.
First and foremost, excellent reproduction from bass into the high end, with unrivaled "punch" and clarity.
I bought a set of those new velour ones and am VERY happy almost two years now. This is A MUST BUY, trust me don't waste your money on those 200 dollar earphones. I would say I have bigger than normal sized ears and the large-diaphragm design, combined with the very soft leather-wrapped earpads, really helps in making the circumpolar design (wrapped around the ears as opposed to on top) work well. In rare circumstances or in the recording studio, it may be necessary. Hope my review helped. Being accustomed to the 7506 when I started to work with the 7509HD, in a rather fundamental way I didn't like them very much.
Would be worth checking out, and you might save yourself twenty bucks. They are loud and full. I feel like the sound is perfect, an even, level balance, even after several years of heavy use.
