Methods Used By Space Game Designers

By Pattie S. Schaefer

A lot of space game designers and programmers place a tremendous amount of effort into the games they prepare since they are hoping to gain loyal fans from this genre. There is a large market for the new releases produced by these designers since millions of people around the world enjoy a wide range of different video games. For example, younger children usually prefer simple games that have a rather straightforward approach to overcoming challenges while adults tend to like more advanced games that require a lot of thinking and strategy. New games are extensively scrutinized before being released to the public since each studio that makes a new game wants to be fairly sure that the target audience will like it.

A space game can be built around a fairly common gaming concept, such as a first person shooter or a strategy game, and then enhanced with creative features conceived by the game's designers. This includes creating the essential storyline behind the events of the game and creating characters that will resonate with gamers while playing. Doing so is not necessarily easy though, since they need to create a character that will not be too adult for children who play the game while at the same time not so childish that adult gamers become insulted or bored by the way the game progresses.

Making a good background setting for a space game is especially difficult for some designs. Games need to have creative backgrounds that remind players of general science fiction themes without seeming like they are copies of other popular science fiction games or movies; striking this balance and being creative yet familiar is a challenge. Concept art must get prepared and then programmed; it is not always easy to turn the visual ideas that the design team has into real visual gaming features on a computer or TV screen.

Testing has to be done of the playable game itself to make sure that it will do well with gamers once it is released. Several hours are invested doing real game testing in which bugs in the programming are identified and removed in order to make the final product as smooth and fun to play as possible.

Space game design demands a lot of effort and is not just a matter of gathering several science fiction ideas and throwing them together. A great game is an excellent example of the product that can be put out when a design team works together and gets creative.
