If you are a fan of video games, you may have thought about game design as a career. This career requires many set skills that go far beyond a love of gaming.

A variety of skill and talent is required to develop a video game. In fact, most game creators are not only artistic, but have good writing skills and a solid background in computer programming. You must think about the many aspects of game design and think about what you might excel in.

Concept Design

In this early phase, writers and game concept specialist come together. These experts decide on the overall goal and the parameters of the game. If you've had an idea for a game or a game improvement, this could be for you.

In this category also falls rules and game play. No video game can be played without regulations. Designers who can apply regulations are in high demand. Rules must be intriguing and rational, so creativity is a must.

3D Modeling/Layout

You may like working on design and layout if you like photo manipulation and drafting. Some companies will hire people to form backgrounds or characters for games in order to give the game style or realism. This part of game design can give a great game a unique style and inspire a fan following.

Placing a portal or a health drink is a significant part of layout design. Some companies may hire individuals who work solely on object placement.

Script and Plot Development

A game can be broken or made by the dialogue or actions of characters. Scripts develop characters and keep the plot moving. Bad dialogue can ruin a game, so script-writers are very important. Understanding of dialogue is essential, much like a movie script.

Knowledge of human motives and nature are important in movie a story forward using dialogue. A game plot may happen in the course of action. It is essential to keep the plot making sense and interesting, no matter how plot driven it is.

New Degrees and Skill

Video game designers are in high demand and the industry has taken off in recent years. In the past, a good design team may have been a few writers, artists, and programmers banding together. Today, there are many colleges and universities that offer special gaming degrees. These degrees are valuable because they cover the skills needed in the industry. Art, story development, and scripting are combined in a comprehensive degree focusing on the needs of a video game designer.
