My Transition To A Digital USB Mixer

By Nestor Chiasson

After I finally switched over to a digital USB mixer, plenty of my buddies have been very disappointed in me. Of course, they are all garage rock music snobs. They believe in making use of a low fidelity, analog audio mixer and cassette recording gear wherever possible. If you ask me, it just would seem absurd. Acquiring a decent audio mixer, a digital audio recorder, and the newest studio equipment is one thing that many music performer desires.

Do you you want to have a rugged and pure sound? It can be done on digital devices just as conveniently as with analog gear. It isn't like you must make everything sound manufactured should you not want to. Even so, having good audio mixers and receivers allows you to do just that if you want to. It is all about owning the most creative alternatives possible.

Nonetheless, I was pretty used to using my analog audio mixer gear. It took a fair bit of money and time to set up a new audio recording studio. I have been using the same 8-track recorder for so many years after all, that I have learned to adapt to all of its quirks. The same goes for the audio mixer.

A digital USB mixer is totally something different. It is tough to get familiar with something so clear and accurate. Then again, when I did get familiar with it, I was definitely grateful for it. I have more control all over the music than previously. Everything would be at just the sound level I required. It was a big transition for me, but one that I have coped with well enough.

The audio USB mixer is just one component of getting a decent professional audio setup. The true linchpin of it is getting the PC audio recording software established and working correctly. Effects that formerly required a specific recording round to set up, thousands of cash worth of equipment, and specialized microphones can now be simulated with a great level of precision in most audio recording software. Overall, it is well worth the effort to be in the loop with the new technology.
