Eight Things an Android smartphone can do that the iPhone cannot!

By Farah Frafali

The debate amongst Android and iPhone is getting as worn out and tiresome as the endless debate between Microsoft Windows and OSX. Then again, as fervent Android enthusiasts we thought we might assemble a comprehensive list on 8 items that an Android phone is capable of doing that an iPhone simply cannot.

1. Openness: The Android os is open source and supported by Google. This allows application programmers and also smartphone producers complete freedom to tweak and customize the source as they desire. This allows them to create amazing, ground breaking new programs. There is no limit to what a developer or smartphone producer is capable of doing with Android.

2. Tight Integration With Google Apps: While we can't refute that Google's scatter gun technique of developing web apps and services leaves all of us totally confused, there are some invaluable tools at our disposal like Transliteration, Google Books, Google Scribe, Walky Talky and the ever nerdy Sky Map. One application which will almost certainly never make it to the iPhone is Google Maps Navigation. Every one of these applications are free and function flawlessly on any Android mobile.

3.Individualized For You By You: With your iPhone you can have virtually any screen setup you like as long as it's laid out in a 4 column grid. Doesn't seem very consumer friendly. Android permits you to customize your experience with widgets and arrange the dashboard as you would like. Widgets can consist of a group of applications and expand when you touch.

4. Power Saving: Android includes the best power saving capabilities in the smartphone market built in to the os. There is no need to install extra applications, the software maximizes the battery life in the background.

5. Connectivity: In contrast to the iPhone you're not dependent on your iTunes account and can plug and play on just about any personal computer. This openness and portability makes an Android smartphone the ultimate in convenience.

6. Application Kill Switch: With a click of a button, Google can send out a signal to all Android phones and tablets to kill and remove all rogue programs. This helps keep your device safe constantly and you can now sleep easy knowing Google has your back.

7. Flash Player: Apple Inc. is anti-Flash, we know that. But, consider the tens of millions of men and women who have to be inconvenienced as a result of Apple Inc's whims? Android is not going to place any restrictions on the type of media you want to view.

8. Security: Android is an open source platform. This means that there are tens of thousands of programmers critiquing the source code continuously. When you leverage the strength of a global development community like this, security flaws are revealed and patched swiftly. Even greater, Android can patch itself auto-magically and not need to be connected to iTunes.

These are simply Eight things which we believe an Android smartphone or tablet is capable of that an iPhone cannot. How many other ways are you aware of that helps to make the Android smartphone first-class?
