The Ultimate Guide To Toner

By Joshua Brandle

While you may be aware of inkjet printers and ink cartridges, you might not be so familiar with laser printers and their associated toner cartridges. Whereas ink is liquid, toner is a dry, powdery substance. There is a drum on the printer, and the toner gets stuck to this by means of an electric charge that gets sent through the toner cartridge. The printer drum then transfers the toner onto the paper in a duplicate of the image to be printed, where it is ready to be sealed. The laser aspect of a laser printer is used comes into play once the toner has been applied; the toner will then be melted onto the paper through the use of a laser. There are colored toner cartridges for sale in some places, but their cost often means that people stick to black and white printing.

Eventually your toner cartridge will go empty, and at that point you'll have to replace it. Toner cartridges can be replaced in a number of ways, and we'll explain a few options here. The different methods will all have their benefits and quirks.

Anyone who asks the manufacturer of their printer what kind of replacement cartridge to get will get the response that the only cartridge to use is the manufacturer's own cartridge. The print quality of your documents will supposedly be the best under this method. Toner cartridges from the manufacturer are going to cost you quite a bit of money, however. The quality of the cartridges you can purchase from the printer manufacturer is going to be pretty similar to the quality of toner cartridges you get from any other resource.

Many companies offer alternative cartridges that will work in your laser printer; these are called compatible cartridges. Any generic cartridge you buy will be of the same total quality as a toner cartridge you buy from the printer manufacturers themselves. When you look at comparative costs, these cartridges are much less costly than those by the manufacturer. When you use a compatible printer cartridge, you are fortunate that you are not voiding your printer warranty. For this reason, people often turn to this method of replacing cartridges.

For the more environmentally-minded person, a recycled cartridge is a great option for when the toner in the cartridge runs out. The cartridges get sent back to the manufacturer when they are empty, and these companies will clean out the cartridges and fill them with new toner. Of course, these companies will be sure to check the quality of the cartridges. You would be correct in assuming that this method of replacing cartridges is quite affordable. Anyone who cares for the environment will also enjoy the fact that they are not using new resources to get a new cartridge.
