Specializing Within The Accounting Field

By Darrel Jefferson

The market is a changeable beast. Just a few hundred years ago, everyone was a farmer, servant, store owner, or politician. These were the stable jobs that many people had. Many families held multiple of these positions. The market looks vastly different today than it did back then. Many looking to start college are worried about the viability of their career choice twenty years from now.

Why start work in an industry that's going to fail in twenty years? A failed career means starting a new one: dropping you to the bottom of the totem pole at a time that you can't afford to take the pay cut.

The first area within accounting is public accounting. Public accounting is the broadest specialization within accounting and as a public accountant you can work as a bookkeeper, consultant, tax advisor, auditor or even as a forensic accountant.

While you are looking into joint degrees, you may want to start with the most common degrees. There are a lot of people that choose to pursue a business administration degree with their accounting degree so they will have a more well-rounded education.

When you pursue an accounting and business administration degree, you have to understand where you are going to want to apply for jobs. There will be a variety of companies that you will be valuable to and you should know how you are going to market yourself.

Start by taking the time that you need to look into careers that are going to be fulfilling for you. Take the time that you need to understand how you are going to work as an intern or even shadow different professionals to find the career that is the best for you.

Computer science is the field to be in to meet these needs. Get involved in computer science if you want a job to get you through the changing market. Second is accounting. As long as there are successful businesses out there, there will be business owners looking to relieve some of their load.

There's nothing that weighs on their minds quite like the finances of the business. Considering the constantly changing laws and the full-time attention they require, they would rather pay someone else to do it, which can be you.

Finally, an internal auditor is an accountant that works within an organization to detect inefficiencies or fraud within a company. Analyzing the finances of a company internally allows the company the ability to catch fraud or criminal activity when it is in its infancy.

When you are in your last year of school it is important that you understand how you are going to be wise about the way that you market yourself. You should be talking to a variety of companies and getting to know what they want in an employee.

Make sure that you understand how to interview well and how to get yourself in for a variety of interviews. Take the time that you need to develop this skill and you will find that you are able to find a career that is fulfilling and that you enjoy working for the rest of your life.
