What is Proofreading?

By Coleman Davoren

How Proofreading and Copy Editing Differ From One Another

What is the difference between proof reading and copy editing? Are both the same? If not, what are its differences? Perhaps you need some explaining.

In comparing first and foremost their contribution to the material, a proofreader does not come before the editor. After commissioning of the material, the author has to work hand in hand with the editor in order to prepare the material for publishing.

Definitely, the editor is a big part in the writing of the material since he comes before the final publishing. He would most likely be editing some contents, advice the writer of the material on certain things he can add to make it more interesting and saleable. He would also be giving recommendations on the order of the content.

The quality is actually the main focus of the editor. There will be communication between the author and editor for some sentences which need revisions. When the writer cannot possibly get the revisions, it can be possible for the editor to be the one to add the parts. The file can be updated by the editor as he/she desires so.

After all the evaluation and reviews of the material, when the editor is finally satisfied with the edited material he will be in charge of sending it to the publication team or the typesetter.

Now this is the time where the proofreader is going to be involved in. All the characters will be checked by him during this time and takes note of the errors. You can see the difference now since he is mainly on the texts and not the quality of the writing. It is his task not to let those obvious mistakes be included in the final publication wherein readers will be able to detect it. All the typo errors must be checked and fixed by the editor, else the issues will be pointed to him.

Obviously, the more difficult task is with copy editing so it has a higher pay. Proofreaders do not always have to have the best knowledge when in terms of grammars and the like; however the editors must be completely knowledgeable about all that. The author and the editor will work in this process so it is important that the editor can know how to deal and work with other people. It is important that he knows how to correct the work of the author in a professional manner.

There are many editors in copy editing who started as novice proofreaders and then mastered and enhanced their skills and now are certified great copy editors.
